I struggle with..:¶
Fidget toys.
Like understanding their meaningful purpose. I see small wheels, balls, switches. The 3dprinting world is full of small thingies, that turn, switch, bend and click. I made one myself, but it is lying next to my desk, used just once. Its functionality is as limited as one gaze revealed in the start, so I refrained from testing others.
The spinners are fun for about five seconds to me. In stores I see whole corners full of plastic items thought to be used for fidgeting. All for just a little money.
There are companies out there who produce thousands of these little plastic items. Items without any function or meaning. Are they toys? I doubt that. I don’t think they provide enough room for play, just enough to - wait for it - fidget with them.
From that perspective, these fidgeting toys are designed well for their purpose - to fidget. That space they fit well. But fidgeting itself is more like an artificial market, probably? Something that nobody would miss if these items wouldn’t be sold for that segment?
Maybe that is a way to think about it: They do not solve a problem or serve a function that would be missed if it wouldn’t exist.
