Dns CNAME¶
Today I have learned something new.
In the DNS world there is the concept of alias. An DNS alias is a kind of surrogate for any existing domain name that usually only forwards to an existing FQDN. If I tell somebody we would like to setup CNAME for any FQDN, this means that I want an alias for an existing domain name.
While almost everybody understands this request correctly, syntactically it is wrong.
CNAME is an abbreviation for Canonical Name, which is basically the true name of a DNS entry. Wikipedia has a good explanation on it.
What you want to say is: Can I have an alias for the CNAME, please?
