Das Boot

An old classic in a new outfit. Or more or less in the old shell - but somehow different. That’s how I’d describe the last Saturdays visit to the Norske Teater in order to see Das Boot.

If you are younger than 25 years, you can probably stop reading. Otherwise you might not remember the movie from 1981 in its classic version (the long one: 293min).

I remember having seen this movie in the early 90’s and around the millennium even in the cinema again. And once at least the long version. Since it’s a German classic (and there aren’t that many of them) and even reached international success, it has spread through several countries.

At this point I wanted to point out that there are only a couple of countries dubbing, but currently it’s dubbing in Italian, French, German, Spanish, Turkish, Hungarian, Czech, Slovak, Russian and Ukrainian (which are more countries speaking that you might believe). So I’ve learned something new. Not sure if Das Boot has been dubbed to all of these languages, but some of its strength comes from the German language.

The theater play is in Norwegian, though. And because the film in its common version is about three hours long, cut.  So the play tells the first part of the story, but it’s good anyway. The kulisse has been made properly and prepares the stage for the story already before the play starts. The actors look pretty close to the movie actors and even Johann has been very well casted.
